Hungover and Hard Up

Alright,

Welcome back to That Kitsch Itch the official blog for www.kitschitchtoys.webs.com the UK’s home for retro and vintage toys. Okay this is going up very late I know, and I guess you might have worked out my excuse from the title of this blog. Yeah, I may have had a little too much to drink last night, but it shouldn’t be an excuse really. It was a friend of mine’s last night running a pub I go to, drinks went down to a pound a pint, yeah, that’s a good reason to drink something that’s usually £3.50, so that’s my excuse for now.

What I really want to do right now though is give a little bit of a preview, as Kitsch Itch Toys will be in York this Sunday for the York Comic Con. I must admit I’m looking forward to it, especially if I get my hands on the shelves I’m supposed to have by now, but that’s a rant for another time. Either way, I’m going to be a lot more organised then I have been at any of these events before, there are meant to be over a thousand people there, so I’m thinking a bit more organisation is in order. This does mean a lot of stuff needs to be showcased. It’s going to feature play sets including Cat’s Lair, the Tower of Omens, the as yet not talked about Bat Cave from Batman Forever, I really need to record my review of that before we get to the Comic Con, I really want to talk about it before it gets sold. We’ll be showcasing a load of boxed toys mixing Marvel Legends, Disney Winkeez, Power Rangers, Thundercats and Doctor Who. Thinking about it, that’s more boxed stuff then I was expecting to have in stock at this point. There will also be some bargain priced mini figures and blind bags for the more price conscious customers, along with the cheap loose figures that aren’t as collectable as others. I’m not going to focus too much on the action vehicles this time, there will be some, such as the Shell Raiser van from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but they take up so much room both on the table and in the car that they won’t be the main focus. We will bring plenty of the loose figures, letting people stock up on those missing from their collection or nostalgic favourites they don’t have from Masters of the Universe, Ghostbusters, X-Men, and all those other properties listed above. I might even bring out the MASK toys.

So that all seems exciting to me. Maybe I’ll give a review on here about what happened, if it’s a good event expect me to be praising it, if it’s a disaster I might not mention it at all. Other than that I’d like to mention my Top 10 series which continues this Friday as we begin to countdown to the return of Doctor Who next month with my top 10 Doctor/Companion pairings, crossing all versions of Doctor Who. Which pretty much leads us to the end of this week’s slightly overhung and late addition of this blog, next week should be a bit more cohesive. Until then…

Traffic & Travel

Alright,

Sorry this is going up slightly later than I planned, events have kind of got in the way this week. Especially the traffic this lunch time. I had to journey out when I normally write this and by the Gods was the traffic bad. It was what should have been a ten to twenty minute journey, a quick trip out, dropping my niece off, no big deal. An hour and a quarter later I’m at last pulling up at home, still with my lunch to cook and a load of videos I needed to record. Still I got the videos done, so they should be up over the forth coming Wednesday’s, which is something at least. I’m going to try not to rant too much here, all I’m going to say is bleedin’ roadworks, and move on.

On to more pleasant things, like Collectorabillia in Leeds next month, which has just launched a brand new advert with Kitsch Itch Toys featured across it. I’m hoping I can include it on here so I can show it off a bit, it’ll certainly be going up on www.kitschitchtoy.webs.com so go and check it out there too. It’s shaping up to be an awesome event, as is Ultracon over at Magna near Sheffield, been chatting to the team running that and everything looks amazing for that event. I can hardly wait for these two things to happen. Keep your eyes on the Kitsch Itch site for more on them.

Now I know that last week I said I’d be trumpeting my Patreon campaign here today, unfortunately that hasn’t developed yet, the video I was hoping to record to promote it hasn’t been finished yet, and I really don’t want to start it without that. It should be this week, depending on events that are beyond my control getting in the way like they did last week. At least the camera on my phone should mean the video is a much higher quality. More on this next week no doubt.

Just a quick note as well about some new items that are just arriving in stock. I’ve got the chance to bring in some Kree-O Cityville Invasion blind bags, they are awesome things and I hope to have a load to sell at the upcoming cons with any over spill to wind up on our website or the ebay page. These minifigures are also part of this week’s Wednesday video, the Blind Bags Summer Special. I’m calling it that mostly because it’s filmed in the garden. It should be lots of fun there’s Marvel and Thomas the Tank Engine involved too. Not only that though, but there is also a few, possibly more than a few, Doctor Who 3 and ¾ figures landing in the store this week. Certainly there is one with the 12^th Doctor in his caretaker outfit. Not one of my favourite episodes and not my favourite figure scale, but still they should be awesome. Expect a review of that arriving at some point too.

Other than that I think it’s time to call it a day on this meandering edition of the blog. Hopefully next week will be a bit more focused. There will be a big update coming on Flay’s First Adventure and what might be coming up after that as well. It is looking exciting. Also we’ve got a controversial episode of Fanon still to come this week, all about Thundercats. Keep your eyes out for it and until next week…

To Go Global?

Alright,

Two things I want to discuss this week, one is good, one not so much. Let’s start with the good stuff first. Kitsch Itch Toys is going global. Now this was always the intention for the site, to slowly grow and begin selling in Europe then the rest of the world. Circumstances have changed however, as they usually do, and those plans are accelerating. Presently the pricing for shipping to mainland Europe is being researched to work out just the right prices to charge, then it’ll be onward to the USA. By the end of September we expect every item in the store to be shippable right round the world. I’m also looking into finding trading partners in both the USA and in Japan, helping the flow of items both ways. If anyone out there reading this is interested in becoming a trading partner of Kitsch Itch Toys we would love to hear from you. Hopefully we can work something out. We’re an approachable bunch and we do love to foster a sense of cooperation.

Well that’s the good news, now here comes this week’s rant. I am slightly disappointed that every week I seem to have to have a little moan about something, but here we go. This company has been set up using the UK’s New Enterprise Allowance. A great service which lends money to help set up a business and then gives a small weekly payment to help get you on your feet. Sounds great right, and in many ways it is. I couldn’t have set this up without their help. Still, they make you jump through hoops to get it. I don’t mind that too much, it’s what I’d expect. The trouble comes when they make it impossible to make it through the hoops like they have done me this time. I love the royal mail, but I know full well that I can’t rely on it to have something delivered the next day, not even first class. So when I get a letter late on a Friday afternoon asking to mail evidence of business to another town by Tuesday I’m in trouble. By the time things are gathered on the Saturday I’ve missed the last collection, so it won’t be picked up until Monday, it then needs to be sorted and shipped out to the right town, it may arrive at the town by Tuesday, but no chance of it getting to the office then. So they’ve made sure my payments are stopped, or at least suspended. I’m going in to talk to my local office about it today, hopefully that will sort things out but that doesn’t change the fact that they made this an impossible task to complete. It’s like they don’t want people to succeed. Okay rant over, I just needed to get that off my chest.

Hopefully next week I’ll be able to trumpet my patreons, I’m planning to record videos for that this week to explain and entertain my way into getting to some people to donate. I’m also hoping to have an update about Flay’s First Adventure next week so yeah, things should be positive again then. Patrons and No Reply

Alright,

It’s a slow summer, I’ll be perfectly honest, I was hoping things could be moving a bit faster, but still we are going places, things are getting better, and I’m pretty content at the minute, I just need more cash to roll in. Which has led to me looking at two major things, the first is getting booked into more cons and toy/collectors fairs, which when you don’t want to travel too far can be a major issue. Especially when one of the key people I keep trying to contact to get into a whole load more of the cons just doesn’t seem to like to respond, at least not for me, I’ve tweeted, facebooked, I’m at the point where I’m ready to try semaphore. I want to be involved with more cons, that’s why I’m getting in touch, I think I can make money with you and that you can make money from me. It’s a win/win situation, just get back in touch, it’s not hard. I don’t mind being told you’re full and that we can maybe work together in the future, I’m happy enough to wait for that, I’ll be polite and courteous. I’ve been a freelance writer and performer for a number of years, I can take being told no. Better to hear that then nothing at all. *Takes a deep breath and calms* Okay that’s my, I’m not sure to call it a rant or a plea, either way that’s it over, for now at least. Hopefully have an update on this next week.

My other major new income source I’m looking at right now is Patreon, two patreons actually, one for my YouTube shows and the other for my photomanips. I’ll mostly talk about my YouTube one here as that ties back into Kitsch Itch Toys, if you want to know more about my manip work leave a message here, if there’s enough interest I’ll talk about it. For those of you who don’t know Patreon is a site where you can donate to your favourite content creators to help pay their bills, and you get rewards out of it. Just a couple of quid a month can make all the difference if you can spare it, I know some can make a living from YouTube ad revenue, I can’t and setting something like this up may help me make that little bit more to help the shows keep coming, they take a lot of time and effort and though I do enjoy it, I need to show the accountant that they really do help. I know I shouldn’t be working for the good of the accountant, that’s not where art lies, but still, sometimes it comes down to doing what you have to do in these situations.

Just a couple of other quick updates, first is a general performing one, looking to record a show reel for my voices, been chatting with a VO artist this week and he’s promised to pass my tape along so I might be able to get a bit more voice work. Then there’s Flay’s First Adventure, my proof of concept RPG, it’s going really well, got the first half of the game more or less done, and the second half shouldn’t actually take all that much. Then on to the Alpha testing. So that’s all very exciting to me.

Fanon Fire

A little bit of a lean week this week in terms of news, had a few personal issues to deal with. Still, in spite of that I still have got a few more items coming into stock, including an awesome Cyberman Cybercontroller in his chair which is going to be reviewed over on YouTube, so keep your eyes out for that. Also we’ve got our first transformer in stock, that will also get a review before it ends up on ebay.

What I thought I would talk about today though is Fanon, my new fortnightly YouTube show, which is due to kick off this coming Friday with a bumper three topic special. I figured before it went up though I’d explain a bit about what the show is and where the idea for it came from. I’m always looking to add a new idea to my YouTube channel, as you might be able to see from the content up there. I have lots of other plans for things that are going to go up as well, for example I will be adding more Doctor Who reviews when the series comes back in September. So while thinking what I could put up opposite my top 10 countdowns I headed down the rabbit hole and ended up watching a load of random YouTube videos about theories in films, comics and video games. I also found myself on TV Tropes a lot too and discovered the WMG section full of speculation. The fact that I got into these two left me feeling that I could do this, I mean I already do it, give me a show and I will over think it and see patterns in things that aren’t there.

So here I am thinking about these fan theories and my own and then I get into chats with friends of mine over on Deviantart about some of the continuity problems with Doctor Who and Power Rangers. Suddenly everything clicked into place, I could make my own YouTube show about this, going into the details of the gaps in continuity and how to fix them, going after what Marvel always used to call the no prize. I didn’t just want to go the same route as these others doing it though, I had to have my own unique spin on it, such as the Scooby Doo theory that’s coming up in part one, or something I haven’t heard anywhere. So armed only with my imagination and an internet connection I bravely set out on the path to fanon.

Hopefully that makes the concept and origin of the show clear, and I hope it’s something you can enjoy. I will talk about any form of entertainment on there, but if I get something special in stock that week, expect that to feature heavily in the show.

So that’s going to do it for another week. Time to see what new stuff I can put on the site or on the ebay shop, I really need to drop a link to that in the store too. SDCC, Flay, Collectorabilia and Fanon, Oh My

Alright,

Lots to talk about this week, so no more shilly-shallying. First let’s address the elephant in the room, SDCC, now we all know I have to talk about it, I can’t just ignore something this massive, but it’s Monday, it’s only just finished, to jump in now might be a little soon, that’s why this week’s top 10 countdown will be all SDCC, I’m going to address it there, see the link above to take you to that come Friday. I will say though, the big Thundercats announcement has got me pumped, I can’t not say that.

Next up is one of the reasons there have been less updates coming to Kitsch Itch Toys, and that is Flay. Now I’m not sure this is really the place to talk about her, but I figured I had to at least mention her. Recently, as well as commitments as a musician, artist, writer, and being the man behind Kitsch Itch Toys, I’ve recently been learning how to make video games. I have an RPG Maker that I’m playing with at the moment and I hope to bring something out about a character called Flay as she learns to be the hero the Kingdom of Yo’ire needs. She may even be getting her own blog too, so watch this space, it’s certainly looking interesting with her.

Also wanted to talk briefly about Collectorabilie in Leeds come September. Yes I know I’ve talked about it here before, and I’m sure I’ll talk about it here again, but it is shaping up to be an epic event and I’m getting excited as the fliers came through today so figured I’d mention that, really good quality too, they’ll be being packaged in with my stock over the next couple of months, so watch out for that piece of spam.

Fourthly I want to talk about another new show I want to put on YouTube, as the Top 10’s are fortnightly I figured this would slot into the other weeks nicely. It’s called Fanon, and it’s going to basically be me talking about wild speculation, guess work and theories around some of the shows I either watch or used to watch, games I’ve played, books, films and who knows what else, with a strong emphasis on things that tie in to what we’re selling at Kitsch Itch Toys. This can be anything from simple stuff like Scooby Doo, Where Are You is set in an economic depression, or the more advanced ideas like how Mario is the bad guy. They are all based on my ideas, things I’ve read on the internet and hushed conversations in the corners of pubs, so please take it all with a pinch of salt, still I think it’ll be fun.

So that’s it for another week here at Kitsch Itch headquarters, hope this week has been fun and informative, we had a lot to get through in a short amount of time, but I think I managed to keep more focused this week. Thunder... Thunder... Thunder...

Alright,

I said last week that I’d probably talk about Patrick Macnee this week, and I really do want to do that, I want to make my tribute to him for YouTube too, but I haven’t had the chance yet. I’m thinking I’ll probably put together a top ten avengers episodes featuring Steed, or something similar. I need something cathartic like that I think, but until I can get that video done I don’t want to say too much.

That’s why I’m moving on to talk about the action photos, you may have seen that they haven’t gone online yet, but I have been taking some. These have involved the original Masters of the Universe, specifically Ram Man and Man-E-Faces taking on Skeletor and some other evil warriors, with a little help from Thunder Punch He-Man. I’ve also done a few featuring the modern Thundercats figures, or at least a few of them, though this was mostly to get some shots of the next thing I want to talk about.

That is my new stock, just arrived this morning, one of the reasons this is going up later than I’d originally wanted, and that was a big box of Thundercats goodness. Not much in it, a couple of Mumm-Ra figures, one in his mummy form, the other in his Ever Living form, both of them from LJN and both of them complete with all their accessories. A very good start I must admit, then there was a card back from the original run, okay not something over special but it will go into the display when I’m next at a convention, so that’s good. Next thing I pulled out the box was something I never expected to find in the box, a modern three-and-three-quarter inch Cheetara. Okay it’s not all that special, loose and weaponless, but it’s a nice bonus to find. Then we have what’s really got me excited about this new arrival. Two boxed items, they have both been opened, but they are still complete, still polybagged, in the original bags they came in no less, and they are just awesome. They are from the new Thundercats series, and they are iconic items from that show and the original. One is a Thundertank, I already have one of these in my collection so I know how awesome it is already. The other is one I don’t have in my collection, but I may have to add, and that’s the Tower of Omens. It may not have the most play features, but it makes such a lovely display piece, even if it is very brown. As most of the bags had been opened I was able to put it together and have a play around with it, take some action photos with it, and put it away again no worse for wear. I’m looking forward to getting these photos up, as well as the video review of it too, and wish I could keep it for myself. I knew this would be the worst thing with Kitsch Itch Toys, wanting to keep, but knowing I must sell. Expect it to be on the site this week, along with the others that have just arrived.

Action/Adventure

Welcome back to That Kitsch Itch the official blog of Kitsch Itch Toys; the UKs home for retro and vintage toys, check us out at kitschitchtoys.webs.com, www.facebook.com/kitschitchtoys, or www.youtube.com/woolicane, there’s pretty much something for everyone there with new stock going online more or less daily.

Okay so here we go, it’s on late again, so here we go again with the excuses, the issue is I’ve been away and have only just managed to finish catching up on the messages, emails and tweets, I know it’s no excuse, but it does mean I have a couple of big announcements coming up. Firstly that I am scheduled to appear on an episode of krytie TV over on www.youtube.com/user/kry102001/ talking all things Red Dwarf, we are setting up the recording times as we speak. I’ll probably speak more about this in the future. The second big announcement is that Kitsch Itch Toys is going back to Leeds, September 19^th I believe it is, for Collectorabilia from retro events ( retroevents.co.uk ) which should be much more up my street. There have been other little things going on too, but none that I can make a big showy announcement for on here yet.

Also the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed the top ten underrated Disney films list did not appear on Friday, well I did warn about being crazy busy, and that it might get put back a week. It wasn’t going to be though, I got it all scripted and ready to record but then a hero of mine, Patrick Macnee, passed away and I recorded a brief thing for him instead, I wasn’t in the mood to be jovial then, as you can probably tell if you’ve seen the video, so that’s going up this Friday. I will talk more about Patrick Macnee later too, as I’m planning a proper video tribute to him on top of the usual content.

That brings us on to what I told you last week I’d talk about, and that’s Action Photos. Now action photos is going to be a gallery on kitschitchtoys.webs.com or at least on a website linked to it if not. It’s going to feature photos of action figures, mostly ones in stock, in action scenes or even in gifs. They’ll post to the facebook page too, in fact I’ve got one on there that is essentially what I mean, and a few will crop up on twitter too. They’re just a little bit of entertainment from a toy fan like myself, hopefully they will be artistic and interesting, though really I’ll be going for exciting and awesome, some may be captioned, while others may be multipart stories. Hopefully eventually I’ll be able to add submissions to it to make some even more epic scenes and another fun way to interact with the site. I mean it’s not like I don’t have enough to do on top of that. Still if you’ve seen my YouTube videos you know how much I like playing with photos, and if you haven’t seen my YouTube videos there are links all over the place.

Countdown to Countdown

Welcome back to the official blog of Kitsch Itch Toys, the UKs home for retro and vintage toys, check us out at kitschitchtoys.webs.com www.facebook.com/kitschitchtoys or www.youtube.com/woolicane there’s pretty much something for everyone there with new stock going online more or less daily.

So last week I talked about trading at my first con in Leeds. I was expecting to gush about it this week, saying how well we’d done and how I was looking forward to the next one. Unfortunately it didn’t work out like that for me, it was all about the comics at that one. Now I love comics, ten years ago I’d have probably spent a ton there getting missing back issues, but I don’t love the fact that comic collectors didn’t seem willing to part with much cash for toys that day. It was a great event that I would recommend to any comic book collector but it just isn’t my market, shame really. Still some good contacts were made and I enjoyed the experience, I have learnt a lot from it too, like how to set out my stock, so far from a total loss. Plus I might have struck a deal to bring a whole load more stock to Kitsch Itch Toys without costing me the Earth (but meaning I won’t get much profit back either because it’s a commission situation)

So what next, well I’ll be booking onto more shows in the coming weeks, so look out for announcements about that, but the immediate plan is to set up an ebay shop to help broaden the amount of people Kitsch Itch can reach, I’m also going to look into the amazon market place, but I don’t know enough about that yet. Expect me to have added another link to the opening paragraph next week to show off this store. The best thing about an ebay store is that I can actually use it to bring people to the main site, which is always my main objective really. On top of the ebay shop though I’m adding something else to the Kitsch Itch family and that’s top ten countdowns. Over on my youtube channel you will already find a few countdowns, but they are an irregular thing at the moment, I want to make them something more regular. Now I’m already releasing one video a week on there (every Wednesday there’s something new) but I will be releasing countdowns fortnightly on a Friday. I intend to start this week with a countdown based on my picks for the most underrated Disney films, though circumstance may push this back to next week. So that’ll be a blog here on a Monday, a new review/haul/misc video on a Wednesday and a top ten on a Friday, plus all the new stock on the website and my other big project action photos, though I’m going to talk more about them next week. Soon Kitsch Itch Toys will be taking over the whole world.

I think that more or less wraps things up for this week, a little disparate perhaps with mostly housekeeping but hopefully it entertained at least a little while it informed. On The Road Again

Welcome to this week’s edition of That Kitsch Itch, the official blog of Kitsch Itch Toys, the UK’s home to retro and vintage toys. After last week’s rant, I’m pleased to say I’m in a much better mood today. The computer is working fine, the facebook ads are boosting site traffic, I’ve got most of my stock organised for easy transport and I’m getting more and more convention and collector fair bookings. All in all, that means that now is a great time to jump aboard at kitschitchtoys.webs.com and see what all the fuss is about.

In fact I want to chat a little today about conventions. I’ve got my first one as a trader coming this Saturday (20^th June), it’s a Sci Fi, Comic and Card Fair in Leeds, if you’re in the area of the Leeds Town Hall on Saturday you should check it out, come by and say hello. Of course it’s not the first one I’ve been to, I’m a veteran of the local collector’s fairs and mini cons we get in these parts leading to meeting Darth Vader, Doctor Who’s version of Winston Churchill and plenty of other interesting people that either had books to shill or were just selling their autographs. I think my favourite was Toby Philpott, he was one of the people who worked as a puppeteer for Jabba the Hut (as well as a lot of other jobs with Jim Henson) and had worked as a clown, a juggler and lots of other things, he works as a librarian now. He’s led a fascinating life and he was great to chat to, spent about half an hour chatting with him and would love to chat with him again. If you get the chance to meet him you should check him out.

Another top moment for me in terms of convention attending came a couple of years ago with my father. My car was in the garage getting a little work done and he agreed to give me a lift there. He’s not quiet the collector I am, in fact he general thinks these sorts of things don’t really have any value and doesn’t approve of Kitsch Itch Toys, but he does enjoy shows like Doctor Who and when he were a lad he had a big comic book collection so there is hope for him, he enjoys looking at the items for sale at these events even if he wouldn’t buy them himself. Still he is a little, shall we say straight laced, he spends most of his time in a proper business suit and thinks pretending to be bigoted is funny. That’s why it was so funny to see his reaction to the cosplayers. Now I’m a part time actor (another pursuit he doesn’t approve of) so I really enjoy dressing up, if I had the budget or the sawing skills I would probably be a cosplayer myself, in fact I’m probably going to pop an RPM Morpher on my arm in Leeds and claim I’m in costume. My father on the other hand… It’s always so much fun to watch an accountant try not to freak out while surrounded by Poison Ivy, The Joker, Thor, a team of Ghostbusters and so many other absolutely awesomely realised characters. He’s meant to be coming with me to Leeds too, should be interesting, hope there are lots of cosplayers, but then I was hoping that before he was coming.
